A two day workshop with leading clinician and researcher Dr Assen Alladin, PhD.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Sexual Dysfunctions

Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November 2015, Islington, London

with Dr Assen Alladin
Clinical Psychologist/Adjunct Associate  Professor
Department of Psychiatry, Calgary University Medical School
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

This hands-on Workshop will provide a practical approach to understanding and treating sexual dysfunctions (SDs) using cognitive hypnotherapy. Sexual dysfunctions comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders that are characterized by clinically significant disturbance in a person’s ability to respond sexually or to experience sexual pleasure. Sexual dysfunctions are fairly common in men and women worldwide. For example, a large American survey showed the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions to be 43% for women and 31% for men. Moreover, erectile dysfunction (ED) in men increases with age; about 52% of men between 40 – 70 present some degree of erectile difficulties. It is therefore essential to find new and effective ways of treating the disorders.

The Workshop will
(1) describe the physiology of the sexual cycle,
(2) review the etiology sexual dysfunctions,
(3) outline medical and physical treatments of sexual dysfunctions,
(4) describe in details the psychological management of EDs,
(5) the use of hypnosis to understand and enhance mind-body function
(5) discuss strategies for improving sexual communication in relationships, and
(6) describe Sensate Focus and self-stimulation homework exercises for desensitizing against anxiety, interrupting the cycle of avoidance and promoting satisfying sensual and sexual interactions.
(7) the use of cognitive hypnotherapy to install and embed all the positive changes in feeling, behaviour, thinking and sexual function

Moreover, the Workshop will explore psychosexual counseling strategies and hypnotherapy for helping clients with ED who are treated with medication. Although the introduction of PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra and Cialis had promised a quick and easy cure, the reality is somewhat different. Many men fail to make adequate use of medication or discontinue its use altogether. This is largely attributed to interpersonal and psychological factors – long thought to be the cornerstone of a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction – that are given little attention by general practitioners, who are now the main prescribers of PDE5 medication.

The Workshops will consist of lectures, didactic instruction, discussions, demonstrations, “socratic dialogue”, and “experiential” learning. The attendees will also have an opportunity to work in pairs to try out some of the strategies and techniques covered. Moreover, attendees will be required to complete the Cognitive Restructuring Form to practice restructuring of dysfunctional cognitions.
