Hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Monday 16th November 2015, Islington, London
with Dr Assen Alladin
Clinical Psychologist/Adjunct Associate Professor
Department of Psychiatry, Calgary University Medical School
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
IBS affects 7-20% of adults in a year. However, these figures are an underestimation as the majority of individuals with IBS do not seek treatment. Nevertheless the number of IBS patients who seeks medical help consumes expensive medical investigations, 2% of adult primary care visits and approximately half of a gastroenterologist’s practice. Although the cause of IBS is not clearly delineated, it is well-known that the condition involves multiple factors in the exacerbation and maintenance of the condition, including affect, arousal, cognition, behavior, and psychodynamics. Moreover, IBS is compounded by such psychological disorders as anxiety disorders and depression. The Workshop will:
- Examine the interaction among the five factors in the understanding and treatment of IBS.
- Describe in detail various psychological and dietary strategies that have been found to be effective in the management of IBS.
- Discuss the importance of addressing comorbid psychological disorders.
- Show use of hypnosis to enhance the mind-body-gut function
- Discuss the Hypnotherapy for IBS treatment protocol
- Demonstrate live most of the treatment strategies described.
The Workshops will consist of lectures, didactic instruction, discussions, demonstrations, “socratic dialogue”, and “experiential” learning. The attendees will also have an opportunity to work in pairs to try out some of the strategies and techniques covered. Moreover, attendees will be required to complete the Cognitive Restructuring Form to practice restructuring of dysfunctional cognitions.
