In 2021, 1 in 8 people aged 17-24 had self-harmed in previous 12 months
60% of adults and 90% of children/adolescents do not seek medical or psychological support after self-harming
Lifetime prevalence for a suicide attempt is 1 in 20 men and 1 in 12 women.
Suicide accounts for 10 per 1000,000 deaths in the UK.

We know that Suicidal and self-harming behaviours are common and that although Suicide remains rare, it does happen and mostly by people who are not flagged as high risk.

As a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist with no other qualifications your sphere of competence will mean that you will be working with clients with sub-clinical issues, and therefore your exposure to clients in this category is likely to be low.  However risk fluctuates, and risk issues can arise with any client, at any time, and so you need to be aware and informed, so you can respond helpfully and feel confident in exploring these areas with clients if things arise unexpectedly or change.

This comprehensive workshop is designed to build your awareness and your confidence in having these conversations so you both explore risk AND be helpful in the moment

  • To be aware of the ways in which risk issues can arise, in any setting, with any client
  • To recognise the role of a hypnotherapist in supporting someone who chooses to confide in them; alongside the importance of maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of some suicide/self-harm facts and figures
  • To recognise the functions and limitations of risk assessment: ie they are not designed to predict suicide but to improve safety, recovery and wellbeing.
  • To develop skills and confidence in these areas, so you can advise supervises on having these conversations, thus enabling them to both explore risk, and to be helpful in the moment
  • Awareness of the usefulness and limitations of measures.
  • Familiarity with, and confidence in using the college protocols around risk.
  • Awareness of the importance of self-care around risk, so that you can both manage your own emotions around this sensitive area, and also support your supervises.
