Learning Objectives
- Understand what safeguarding is, and how it applies to you as a trainee hypnotherapist.
- Know the legal definitions of a child and an “adult at risk” and understand that not every vulnerable-seeming client meets the safeguarding threshold.
- Recognise the difference between an amber flag (monitor, explore gently, seek supervision) and a red flag (act, and act promptly).
- Understand what abuse is, in its various forms, and how disclosures — from children or adults — can happen at any time, often without the word “abuse” ever being used.
- Learn how to respond to a disclosure: remain calm, don’t investigate or express shock, and explain the limits of confidentiality clearly.
- Understand your responsibilities as a private practitioner (not a statutory service): your role is to alert the appropriate authority, not to act on the information yourself.
- Know how and when to keep a clear paper trail, and what good case-note documentation looks like in amber and red situations.
- Practise applying this framework through facilitated role play and group discussion.
- Know exactly who to contact at the College, Krissie or Theresa, via your coach, if a concern arises.
